Ok, so Joe Garris' 33-page special report is a sales letter for his Product Idea Evaluator product. So what? As long as it provides some good marketing info that you can use--and it does--I'd say it's certainly worth reading.

There's a lot of good stuff out there being given away for free in the form of free reports, viral ebooks, and the like. A lot of people consider this kind of material junk, since we all know that the bottom line is to pitch the product.

But I don't sweat a sales pitch or two. Why should I? Afterall, the ultimate goal is to make the sale, build your list, and step up to a little back end marketing. So a little selling in the material is ok with me, as long as the rest of the content has something worthwhile to offer.

I've come across free stuff that delivers plenty of high-value info. Sometimes more than you'd get from a purchased product.

It's just a matter of separating and extracting the useful information from the sales pitch.

Anyway, thanks for the tip, Mike!

James

That's the key, of course ... that you can derive benefits from it.

What form of business, Online or off, doesn't offer free or low cost offerings specifically designed to upsell?

As long as the prospect/customer is receiving compensation equal to ... or more than, their investment I have no problem with it.

What I don't go for is painting a perceived value that doesn't deliver as promised.

I've been subscribed to newsletters over the years, authored by a few pretty well known Marketers, that had basically no content or value, at all ... a continuous pitch-fest.

I can only assume that their way with words was the only thing that kept them in business, as most of the stuff they pitched went from launch to shelf faster than a 'B' movie.

A dollar's worth, or more, for a dollar spent is the only way I do business.

If it's free, and you get something out of it ... you're ahead of the game.

Regards,

Mike "simply good business" Merz

Very astute point, Mike. I've noticed the same thing. And when it happens, you can bet the subject marketer loses credibility, regardless of how big the name is.

And we all know that once their credibility is lost, their messages--be they special reports or email notices--start getting ignored, tossed, or opted out on. Eventually, even the marketing groupies get tired of it and start looking elsewhere...

On the other hand, take a guy like Damon Zahariades. When he sends something down the pike, you can bet I'm going to read it, and I mean read it RIGHT NOW! I may not agree with everthing he says, but he ALWAYS delivers rock solid content and his product reccomendations are normally right on target. It don't know if he's completely abandoned the internet marketing arena, as I haven't heard anything from him in a long, long time. But, I'm waiting patiently...

In fact, I'm just about ready to take a short drive down the freeway and check in on a couple of Starbucks just to make sure he's all right...

Anyway, I agree with you 100 percent, Mike, on the need to upsell and work the back end. Every product, ad, or message should have some opportunity for the customer to get more...if they're satisfied. But if the customer doesn't get at least a dollar's worth of value for every dollar spent, then the marketer doesn't deserve to be rewarded with another sale. It's that simple.

Now that would be my two cents. Nice forum, Mike!

Thanks, again, for your reply ... and 2 cents. Wink

It's feedback like yours that makes the Forum productive ... and I appreciate it.

Yes, Damon ... it has been a long time ...

Let me know if you manage to contact him ... would you, James?

Interesting idea, and one that I apply to some other sales presentations. One in particular is a series of free networking seminars held locally by an outfit called IBI Global (ibiglobal.com). Every Tuesday night, they host a meeting just a few miles from my night. Each meeting has three parts; 1) a recorded sales pitch about joining IBI, 2) a featured speaker, usually on some business topic, and 3) a networking and coaching session. The featured speaker is sometimes very informative, other times just a follow-on commercial for IBI. The networking and coaching sessions are invaribly worthwhile.

Last Tuesday, I sat front-row center to watch BJ Dohrman, the IBI founder himself, speak at the local IBI meeting. This guy makes teflon look like sandpaper. You can see him in action in some of the film clips posted on the IBIGlobal.com site. He's the one that resembles a cross between Slick Willie Clinton and Robert 'Bob' Tilton -- including the up-close gregariousness. It is well-nigh impossible not to like this guy and get swept up in his talk. I want to learn how to do that!

But I was there to study how he did it. He's a master, and I halfway suspect that IBI is basically a scam (haven't really decided yet -- if anybody out there has an opinion on IBI, please let me know).

He comes across as super-sincere. Elsewhere, I have characterized IBI as a cult, and he plays the part of cult leader fabulously -- and more convincingly than the Moonie leader whose name I have forgotten, or that wierdo mystic that ran around in the Rolls Royse in Oregon.

I have gotten something of value from every IBI meeting that I have attended, while at the same time successfully deflecting any and all attempts to get me to join the club. Personally, I think it would be more fun to start my own cult than to join somebody else's...

I was poking around looking for other things on the IBI site, and I stumbled across the recipe they use for their sales meetings -- a bunch of videos showing EXACTLY how they do their thing; http://www.ibiglobal.com/Careers/index.htm
